Rider Cup NYC 2014 Finals Recap

August 18th, 2014 Posted by Press Releases, Video No Comment yet

Over the past 5 weeks, over 20 teams from the 5 boroughs went head to head in the Rider Cup NYC Qualifiers in order to get to the finals.  It came down to the top 12 teams who skated their hearts and souls out, as there could only be one winner who would go home with the $10K cash and the all expenses paid trip to South Africa to compete in the Rider Cup World Championships at Kimberly Diamond Cup this October.

Only 12 points separated the final 2 teams, Soul Team from Brooklyn, and LES Bomb Squad 1 from Manhattan, from going home with $10,000 and an all expenses paid trip to South Africa. In the end, it was Soul Team that came out on top!

Huge thanks to presenting sponsors World Skateboarding Grand Prix and Volcom for making it possible! Thanks also to our shop partners: Labor, Vault, Heavenbound 7, Belief, KCDC and CD Skateshop.  Thanks to our non profit partner the Harold Hunter foundation, our media partner NY Skateboarding, and the Sticks and Stones Productions crew for putting on 6 great events. Special thanks goes out to everyone that made it out from the Northern Cape Provincial Government from South Africa for their support and presence at the event!

We can’t wait to see Soul Team compete in South Africa for the Rider Cup World Championships at the Kimberly Diamond Cup and hope to see all the teams back next year!  Thanks to all the skaters, spectators and people that supported and made it possible!

Rider Cup NYC: Staten Island Qualifiers

August 11th, 2014 Posted by News, Press Releases No Comment yet

Shaolin, The forgotten borough, The 5th Borough, Home of Wu, Brooklyn with Parking, the Borough with the most nicknames and home of 50-50 Skatepark the site of the Staten Island Rider Cup qualifiers! We rolled up to the park a little early as we left early fearing the famous dreaded Staten Island traffic. Ed Pollio and the 5050 staff showed up a few minutes later and then the kids started showing up.  After sign ups, we had 2 eligible teams, so it would be a “straight to the finals” event.

In the end it was the Shaolin Shredders who went home with the $2000 cash prize and a spot in the Rider Cup NYC finals next weekend at LES Skatepark! Shaolin Shredders will be competing for a spot in the Rider Cup Championships at Kimberley Diamond Cup in Kimberley, South Africa this October.

Check the results and photo gallery below. Big shout out and thanks to Ed Pollio and the 50-50 Skatepark family for helping make the event a breeze and Carolyn and the CD Skateshop family for the BBQ and support!  Of course, thanks also goes out to Volcom for the support. Staten Island might have the most nick names out of any borough but it’s got some serious heart! See you next Saturday for the finals at LES!

Rider Cup NYC: Queens Qualifiers

August 5th, 2014 Posted by News, Press Releases No Comment yet

After a stressful week thinking about the huge storm that was supposed to hit Friday night and Saturday morning, we decided to roll the dice and push the Rider Cup Queens Qualifier start time back to 3 on Saturday. We crossed our fingers and hoped it would be dry…

Luckily, the storm subsided and 8 teams of Queens’ rippers registered and were ready to give it a shot at the $2000 cash prize and one of three spots in the Rider cup NYC finals. Queens brought the most intense skating that we’ve seen so far at Rider Cup NYC, which is why 3 of the 8 teams would be advancing to the finals. In the end, those teams were Team Belief, Wave Sauce, and Outliers.

Congrats to Team Belief for taking home the $2000 prize and a top spot in the Rider Cup NYC Finals!  Thanks to everyone that came out and skated and supported.  Big thanks to Sticks & Stones Inc., Belief Skateshop, and Volcom for making it happen.  See you next week in Staten Island for the final qualifier and then on August 16th for the finals at LES!

Rider Cup NYC Qualifiers: Brooklyn

July 30th, 2014 Posted by Articles No Comment yet

The third stop of the Rider Cup NYC brought us to New York’s most populated borough: Brooklyn!!!  As most New York skaters know, McCarren skatepark is probably the WORST skatepark in the city that happens to be in the borough with the most skaters, and in a location that has the highest concentration of skaters in the area (and is easiest for everyone to get to).  As bad as the park is, 6 teams of Brooklyn natives came out and did what all skaters do; they adapted and KILLED the park! Congrats to Soul Team and Brooks Squad for qualifying to represent Brooklyn in the Rider Cup NYC Finals for a shot at an all expenses paid trip to South Africa for the Rider Cup Championships at Kimberley Diamond Cup this October! Photos and results below.

1. Soul Team (1080 points)

Dwayne Almonte

2. Brooks Squad (967 points)
